Expert advice & support

In 2008, the Fisheries Business Development Team (BDT) was established under the Atlantic Integrated Commercial Fisheries Initiative (AICFI), through a partnership arrangement between Ulnooweg and the Atlantic Policy Congress of First Nations Chiefs. The BDT is also assisting communities with business development support through the Northern Integrated Commercial Fisheries Initiative (NICFI) and the Indigenous Marine Servicing Initiative (IMSI).

The BDT consists of a team leader and team members or business development advisors as well as the addition of two Fisheries Training Technical Advisors and Coordinators (TAC). The team has expertise and background in fisheries and aquaculture, business and community economic development.

The BDT provides business support services in the form of:

Technical Expertise

Professional Advice

Business Plan Development

Project Planning

Operational Support

Technical Advisors and Coordinators

The Fisheries Training Technical Advisors and Coordinators (TAC) provides advice and support services relating to the training of fisheries management personnel, commercial fish harvesters, and aquaculture workers. They liaise with industry organizations and government departments to obtain and provide information relevant to commercial fishing operations. The TAC helps the managers and staff of the Indigenous Commercial Fishing Enterprises (CFEs) to identify training needs, and assists with coordinating training, accessing resources, and providing technical advice and support services.

Other Support Services

The BDT has undertaken to carry out its support role by providing the following types of services:

  • Assisting in the preparation of business plans and harvesting/operational plans
  • Providing advisory and hands on analysis to help determine the feasibility of new project ideas
  • Assisting in the evaluation of proposals and reports pertaining to business planning studies and assessments
  • Assisting with adopting best management practices and strategies for improving commercial fisheries operations and business enterprises
  • Assisting in preparation of proposals to secure financing for new project development initiatives
  • Assisting with implementation of Project Management Action Plans for more effective project management
  • Assisting with establishing Project Management Action Teams to help monitor progress of projects and to provide measurable aftercare
