It's that time of year again!

We are excited to announce that we will be hosting the annual Summer Solstice run on June 22nd, 2024 in Millbrook, NS. As always, there will be a 5K, 10K and 2K run with a post run breakfast social. Warmup starts at 8am!

10K RUN • 5K RUN/WALK • 2K RUN/WALK

We would like to thank everyone who joined us for the 2023 Summer Solstice run on June 17th in Millbrook, NS. As always, it was amazing to see everyone who participated and helped out with the 5K, 10K, and kids 2K run and post-run breakfast social.

The Run highlights two major causes:

Healthy Lifestyle – In its commitment to promoting healthy lifestyles, Ulnooweg continues to support physical activity in Indigenous communities by sponsoring and organizing a major run each year while offering the opportunity for each community to participate virtually.

Community Healing – In addition to promoting an atmosphere of healing, Ulnooweg hopes to capture the spirit of Truth and Reconciliation by inviting non-Indigenous communities to join our community and cultural hospitality at the Summer Solstice Run each year.

Enjoy a few special moments from past year’s.

Ulnooweg Summer Solstice Run 2023 Medals

Inspired by the Theme of Language

This year’s medals were designed by Inuit artist Bronson Jacque, from Postville, Nunatsiavut. Bronson has been making art for nearly fifteen years now, and is under 30 years old. To broaden his artistic skills, Bronson studies Fine Art at NSCAD University in Halifax, NS. Traditionally, he paints in oil, known for its ephemeral qualities and loose, hazy naturalism. It is his artistic family that has influenced his perspective over the years on Labrador’s art scene and in his work. This year, Bronson was selected to design medals for Ulnooweg’s Annual Summer Solstice Run in three categories: 2k, 5k, and 10k.

As an Inuk, in his own language journey in learning Inuktitut, and living and working in the unceeded territory of the Mi’kmaq, Bronson sees the importance of language revitalization and is incorporating elements into his designs that honour both cultures. The talking stick is a powerful tool that people use to solve problems and express themselves freely. Those who hold a Talking Stick possess the power of words. By holding a Talking Stick, the holder can gain the courage to speak truthfully and wisely. In the designs, ancestors and family references are meant to evoke a sense of pride in one’s cultural heritage and language, as well as inspire people to continue to learn and teach.

Bronson’s designs for the Solstice Run medals incorporate the spirit of our ancestors, as a guiding force while incorporating meaningful fauna from nature, such as the cloudberry, ostrich fern and trees. Bronson’s use of plants is intentional, as they have been used for food, medicine, and ceremony. These are ways in which our communities communicate and teach one another. Indigenous cultures, especially Mi’kmaw territories, seasons play a vital role in how we move through the world and the full moon is named for each of these seasons. This year’s summer Solstice medals also feature the moon, sun, and the four directions. It’s the intricate details that each design holds a story and can have meaning for different perspectives that make it even more meaningful for each runner.

We are thrilled to have Bronson Jacque designing this year’s Summer Solstice Run medals and honored to have his unique vision and skill bring language and Indigenous culture to life. We are excited for each and every runner to receive one as they cross the finish line on June 17, 2023.
